Refinement and Everyday Luxury
Although every GM brand, including Chevy and Cadillac, is more than 100 years old, Buick is the oldest among them and is the oldest US car company still in operation today. Buick’s legacy of amazing vehicles goes all the way back to 1899 when the first couple of vehicles were manufactured by the Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company. The company primarily made engines for other applications, and the owner, David Buick, was hesitant to really commit to focused automobile construction. Things changed in the years that followed, particularly with the development of the valve-in-head, or overhead valve, engine that was patented by Buick in 1904.
At that time, the company changed its name to the Buick Motor Company and they began producing vehicles, making just 37 automobiles in their first year. In 1905, William Durant, who would go on to start General Motors and also to found Chevrolet, was brought on as a new investor and he shifted production to a new factory over the next couple years. The results speak for themselves: Buick made 750 vehicles in 1905, followed by 1,400 vehicles in 1906, then more than 4,600 automobiles in 1907, and nearly 9,000 cars in 1908—making them the top car manufacturer in the country at that time.
Much of Buick’s initial success came from the overhead valve engine they had patented and the impressive performance it brought to the road. With the tremendous success of Buick, Durant was able to launch a larger venture: creating General Motors as a new kind of car company that would act as a conglomerate of numerous brands. When GM formed in 1908, Durant brought Buick into its fold, quickly acquiring Oldsmobile that same year, followed by more companies—including Cadillac and Chevy—in the years that followed. That is the short version of things; the founding and acquisition of Chevy was pretty complicated, but we will keep things simple.
With GM, Durant established each company to have its own share of the market rather than encouraging them to compete against each other. While Chevrolet was the starting option for their customers, Pontiac and Oldsmobile were slotted just above it, with Buick as a more luxurious option and Cadillac at the top as GM’s prestige brand. More than a century later, Buick remains a hallmark of sophistication and invigorating performance, delivering a driving experience that thrived thanks to iconic models like the Buick Roadmaster of the 1940s and ‘50s, as well as the LeSabre of the following decades.
Our Selection of New and Used Buick Models
