Generations of the Sierra 1500
First Generation: 1987
The early history of the GMC Sierra 1500 is a bit complicated. The Sierra and the popular Silverado were both born out of the classic Chevrolet C/K line of trucks. In 1987-88, the Sierra name was first attached to the C/K. This is usually regarded as the first generation of the Sierra 1500, even though it was the C/K’s third generation. Depending on who you ask, though, the second generation, starting in 1999, might have been them actual first generation of the Sierra 1500.
Second Generation: 1999
GMC first fully introduced the Sierra 1500 to the world in 1999 after seeing a need in the market for a versatile full-size pickup truck that would be useful to a wide range of people. It set out to provide a truck that had utility and power and didn’t forget about interior comfort for the passengers. The Sierra was a completely stand-alone truck and soon replaced the C/K truck entirely, improving on styling to be more modern and increasing the overall smoothness of the ride.
Third Generation: 2007
The next generation of the GMC Sierra 1500 came with a whole boatload (or should we say bed-load?) of upgrades and advanced features. GMC wanted to make sure that this truck was truly distinguishable from its predecessor and didn’t pull any punches. First, it completely redesigned the interior cabin of the Sierra, keeping an eye towards modernism throughout and adding sharp appointments everywhere. All materials and upholstery was upgraded, build quality became more durable and consumers raved about the overall feel of the cabin.
During this generation, the Sierra 1500 saw some new engines added into the mix as well. There was an improved lineup of robust V8 engines that turned heads no matter where they drove due to their audible power. All these engines made the Sierra more powerful, and some even provided better fuel economy, saving drivers cash at the pump when they went to fill up.
Building on the redesigned interior appointments, GMC also took steps to give Sierra drivers the best-possible ride quality. There were updates to the chassis and the suspension so that even when driving over the bumpiest terrain, everyone inside would still feel pampered and comfortable. After all, what difference do some comfortable seats make if you’re being jostled left and right when out for a drive?
Overall, GMC succeeded at engineering a truck that could seamlessly transition from road trips and daily driving to outdoor adventuring. As a full-size entrant in the pickup market, it quickly gained the hearts and minds of Americans across the country.
Fourth Generation: 2014
This fourth generation of the Sierra 1500 is probably the one you’ll see most in used GMC Sierra 1500 assortments in dealership lots. It spanned from 2014 to 2018, and thousands of fourth-generation Sierras are still on the road today, which is a testament to their long-standing durability and GMC’s commitment to ease of repair when necessary.
2014 saw some major upgrades to the Sierra. On the exterior, GMC went all out to make the body style more rugged and contemporary. Secretly, though, it made the Sierra more aerodynamic. Most important, however, are the advancements it made in engine performance. GMC introduced a new lineup of EcoTex3 engines during this time. New drivers could get a 4.3 liter V6, a 5.3 liter V8, or even a massively powerful 6.2 liter V8 engine. The crazy thing about the boost in power was that the Sierra didn’t lose any fuel efficiency. This was partly because of the improved aerodynamics of the truck’s body.
Fifth Generation: 2019
In the 2019 model year, GMC gave the Sierra another massive upgrade. It somehow improved almost every feature and attribute of this truck. There were improvements in performance, exterior and interior design, and towing and hauling capabilities. We won’t list them all out here as it would take too long, but we’ll highlight a few of the key upgrades that were added:
GMC put entertainment in the foreground by adding the latest infotainment technology to the dash. Drivers could use a bigger touchscreen to connect their smartphones, run navigation apps and messages, stream music, and much more. Advanced driver-assist features like a head-up display and rear camera mirror were added to improve safety and convenience. The seats became comfortable, the cabin got less noisy, and drivers could leave the heat, cold, or dust outside. Driving a Sierra 1500 became less about rushing to the next job and more about decompressing and centering yourself so you could focus and apply yourself totally to the next job when you got there.
The Sierra also saw improvement in its towing and hauling capabilities, getting a MultiPro Tailgate to simplify loading as well as a unique carbon-fiber composite bed that could stand up to even the toughest jobs. An advanced ProGrade Trailering System also became available for drivers who wanted more towing capability and ease.
